Please let me know if this sounds decent:

Ripping out old stair banisters (these are old style horizontal boards not really very safe) then fitting new banister's and spindles 3.5m banister up the stairs and 2.5 on the top of the stairs 42mm width half nevel for the top all redwood.

Quoted £1000 we are in the midlands.

I have tried to get a few other quotes in but nobody local seems to want to come in for a quote currently.

I was expecting more around the £600 mark personally.

Cost up the spindles - around £3 each in pine at Tradepoint, but cheaper elsewhere in Redwood. Allow a day for a carpenter to do the work and I think you have answered your own question regarding the price.

The value of the work is low, but a product, or job, costs whatever one is prepared to pay for it. Hence your choice appears to be getting more quotes, paying £1000, or not having the work done.
