Student nurse and partner unemployed

Hi guys I am going to be making an appointment with CAB to ask these questions although I thought I would ask in here too in case anybody has any experience of our situation. Myself and partner have two children at home and I am beginning a nursing degree so I will be receiving a bursary my partner currently claims JSA as he is unemployed at the moment - hopefully this will change soon but if not will he need to stop his claim when I begin university ? Can't seem to find any information that is relevant to us

Why would he need to stop his claim of JSA because you're going to university? Or have I misread?

Would have thought you need to notify a change of circumstances. Assuming you are both under a joint claim.

You will now have access to student maintenance grant, loan & bursary which will be declared and this may change the amount of JSA your OH receives.

If he is claiming contributions-based JSA then your change of status will make no difference whatsoever.

If he is claiming income-based JSA then he will need to tell the Job Centre about your change of situation and the amount of your bursary. In principle you are expected to support him, so the amount of JSA he receives may be reduced depending on how much money you receive.

Because his claim is income based for JSA and the income in our household will increase once i start receiving bursary

  • I am not entitled to maintenance grant or loan I know students in England can claim a reduced amount of loan but students in Northern Ireland cannot - I'm not sure why it is different here but I think I can claim an adult dependent grant.

Thank you Voyager this is what I had expected I was just finding it difficult to find confirmation anywhere and entitledto calculator does not cover students etc.

    Thanks again
