Boiler Thermostat Installed Incorrectly

I had a new boiler installed in the summer, and I gave them my new Nest Thermostat to install at the same time.

I've had some problems recently with the Nest unit unpairing, therefore switching off the heating. After some trouble shooting with Nest, it turns out the Nest link-unit needs to be installed 30cm away from the boiler, mine is 3cm away. The 30cm is stated clearly in the installation guide.

Before I call the company, what are my rights on this? I paid some of the balance on credit card.

I've had some banging heating pipes which I queried with them, but they were quite dismissive about this problem, so expecting a fight.

  • Did you tell them where to install it or just give them the instruction manual?

I'm no joiner or plumber but I thought that all these things were normally dealt with in mm rather than cm? Could possibly explain the being 30mm away rather than 30cm if you didnt tell them where to put it (not that it excuses their error if they've made one)

I didn't even open the box when I gave it to them. It's pretty clear though.

I have a Nest. Not sure why there needs to be a minimum distance for wired connection.

It's so no metal from the boiler blocks the wireless signal between the thermostat and the heat link.

We're missing the point though guys.

It might be something to do with the heat link being affected by the heat generated by the boiler. Having it at least 30cm away as shown in the installation manual would prevent this from happening.

I would say that yes, as they failed to follow the correct installation procedure than they are liable for correcting it.
As you paid for some of the installation by credit card, the card issuer is also liable for any breech of contract.

Before you go any further, it might be advisable to contact the manufacturers and ask their opinion of what might happen if the heat link is too close to the boiler (and make sure that you tell them how close your one is fitted).
If you can get confirmation from them that the fitting location could be causing the problem, it can only help your case.

Assuming they are the ones that installed it in the wrong place and you in no way asked them to.

It would also help your case if Nest confirmed to you that the dropping is caused by the incorrect placement of the unit

Yes Nest troubleshooted on the phone and this was the first potential issue so needs to be fixed before we look into anything else that could be wrong.

If you can get them to put it in writing to evidence it then that'd be more useful than a call
