I have flown there 12 times and leaned towards AM arrival

I stopped off in Hong Kong on way back last year just for 24 hrs and wish I hadn't, it was just a faff and would rather have got home a day earlier
A 24 hour stopover will be a faff as you have to get your luggage, go through immigration, find the hotel etc, it's a bit pointless. Not sure if HK have a transit hotel, that might have been a better option. The one in Singapore you're airside all the time, no need to go through immigration and your bags are checked through to the final destination so you don't need to collect them/check them back in.

I arrived at night. Went to bed. got up around 7am and was pretty much onto local time from there.
Struggled coming back to get onto UK time.

A 24 hour stopover may be a waste of time as you are likely to be too tired to actually anything in the city other than sleep but if you have the time available and you can treat a 2-3 day stopover as part of your holiday then it is a good opportunity to see somewhere that you otherwise wouldn't go to.

Clearly it doesn't make sense for a 2 week trip to Australia but if you have more time at your disposal then it can be very worthwhile.
