Administrator Rights - Windows 8.1

I'm the only user of my home laptop, running on Windows 8.1. It appears that I don't have Administrator rights - how do I get these?

I'm reluctant to do too much surfing at present due to my Google Chrome issue. However I did trying running "net user Administrator /active:yes" as suggested by one webpage, but just received a "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied."

Because of the Google Chrome issue detailed in my other thread, I tried a system restore. This failed saying I should run a chkdsk /R ... but alas it says I do not have sufficient privileges to invoke this utility running in elevated mode. I presume this is due to a lack of Administrator Rights?

Right click CMD run as administrator .

Do you have run as administrator on your right click menu ??

Yes, you need the Admin command prompt:- Windows key+X then select Command Prompt (Admin). Then try the command.

That did the trick in that it enabled me to invoke a CHKDSK, scheduled for the next time the laptop boots up. Alas it kept getting stuck at 13%, a common issue apparently (although not necessarily at 13%) and it took a while for me to find a way to cancel/bypass it.

It's absolutely correct that the administrator should not be logged in all the time. This was a weakness in previous versions of Windows. You should only be 'raising' yourself to administrator for important things, when you know what's going on.
When you go to install stuff, the screen goes dark and that wee window comes up asking if you want to continue? That's elevating you to administrator to install.
You can usually right click on a program and click 'run as administrator'.
