Google Chrome Issues

Running Windows 8.1; Chrome version 39.0.2171.95 dev-m

Something has happened to my Google Chrome. As well my links page (which was the default when opening a new page) disappearing, my AdBlock extension has gone from my Google Chrome. Have tried to re-add it via Settings/Extensions but gives a NETWORK_FAILED error.

On the "About" tab, it does say that "Updates are disabled by the administrator". Could that be the reason? Should I allow updates and if so, then what would be the best way? Or could it have other repercussions of updates being auto-applied that I don't want?

Might my best option be to simply uninstall & re-install Chrome?

These adverts are driving me crazy and are far more prevalent than I would have imagined. For example, sometimes a new advert tab spawns as soon as I click in the Google search box!

Windows Defender has not detected any issue with my laptop and a system rollback alas failed.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorted now, by uninstalling & re-installing Chrome and deleting the temporary files in between.

I also discovered that a couple of things had downloaded onto my laptop this morning, including SaverAddOn. Not sure whether this disabled my AdBlock or whether AdBlock being disabled resulted in it getting installed, but it probably explains why I was getting an unbelievable number of adverts etc

Sounds like adware/malware is responsible, i'd run Malwarebytes just to make sure.

Thanks for the tip. Although I've used it in the past, I hadn't downloaded Malwarebytes on my current laptop as I assumed Windows Defender would identify everything. Obviously not as Malwarebytes did spot a few things including a couple it categorised as "Malicious".

Is it worth paying for the premium? Or will the freebie version ordinarily suffice?
