Switching Energy Suppliers
I have Solar Panels and a FIT meter, is it still possible to switch energy companies or am I tied to my current supplier as a consequence ? I know I am paying significantly more than many other suppliers and my current package ends on 28 February 2015. Any advice most welcome - Ian

Switch at will. Your energy supply and generation contracts(FITs) are separate from each other. There is no financial advantage in switching your PV contract to another company so, if you are happy with the level of service that you are getting, then stay put. I have my energy supply from Ovo and EDF pay my FITs.
PS: Just as I pressed send, the doorbell rang and it was a man to read my FIT meter on behalf of EDF. Sends to be happening about once per year. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thanks for the above post - just looking at moving to a better tarrif for my energy and leaving my FITs with my existing provider.
Does anyone know if the likes of Ecotricity penalise you for doing this?0 -
You will not suffer any penalty: as I said above, they are separate contracts and there is no financial advantage/disadvantage switching FIT payers. The money for FITs comes from Govt. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

The smaller suppliers are not obliged to participate in FITS, so may only handle your FITS account if your supply contract is with them. All the Big Six have to participate, not sure about Ecotricity.
There is no 'penalty' in terms of your supply contract.

Im currently trying to switch suppliers but can't because ecotricity have got the wrong information on the national database. They're denying this and saying there not preventing me switching but when I try to the other companies are saying they can't so I'm locked in a battle. Also have smart meters, any help appreciated.

I would speak to the Energy Regulator or the Conduct Authority of the Energy Regulator. Whilst they will not take on complaints from individual customers they will give you the correct advice.
I had problems with Ecotricity regarding the reading of my FIT meter and the Energy Regulators Conduct Authority told Ecotricity what they were asking me to do was unreasonable and unfair.
Also, make a formal complaint to Ecotricity - I believe that Ecotricity have to send a copy of your complaint to the Conduct Authority and that is likely to get your issues resolved more quickly.
