Best current account opinions?

At the mo I'm with Lloyds bank thinking of switching to get a bit of a better deal.
As it stands I'm charged for buying online in foreign currency and it is quite expensive.
I'm looking for a free account with a debit card.
With a view to upgrade from there at some point to their premium account
Any suggestions?

First you say that you want a free account with no charges for currency conversion.
Then you say that you were thinking about Natwest Silver that isn't free and comes with a "card from hell" in terms of the overseas charges as per MSE's classification.
The only free current account with no charges for conversion worldwide is with exotic Cumberland Building Society (NW England & SW Scotland).
Norwich & Peterborough BS Gold Classic current account is not free, but the fee can be avoided by some jumping through hoops.
Metrobank doesn't charge for conversion, but in Europe only.0 -
Are you planning to use the account for business purposes? In which case you would require a business account.0

Perhaps looking for a free account is not the right approach but look at the cost/benefit compared to what you are paying out now.
You could look at moving straight to a Nationwide FlexPlus packaged account. In my opinion, at £10pm it offers good value and gives you commission-free currency exchange and 3% on balances up to £2,500.MFiT-T3 #149: {Q4/14} (£46,447)-->(£0) ~ +£46,447=100%
