DMFs aren't an issue these days as you can buy a kit for around the £300 mark (depending on car) that contains a solid flywheel, uprated clutch and metal (as opposed to plastic) clutch actuater arm.

As DMFs are considered a service part by Ford, with the recommended replacement being every 80k miles, these kits soon pay for themselves and the only thing you notice with them is a bit of extra vibration through the clutch pedal (same as a non-DMF equiped diesel car).

Also, not all diesels have a DPF (my '08 plate Berlingo 1.6HDi with the 92 bhp engine doesn't have one for instance).

As for mpg, well, it all depends on how heavy your right foot is.

had the same engine in a pug 2007 207 GT got about 54mpg mix of A roads and motorways.

    problems:

noisy DMF - replaced, then noisy again after 6k
    leaking injector seals
    cracked intercooler
    turbo
    EGR

got 70k out of it and got rid! IMO stay away from the 1.6 tdci/hdi. DPF was ok, ash content was always low - regen'd a hell of a lot tho! Regular oil changes are a MUST on the 1.6 hdi/tdci

put me off used diesels for life! Got a mk7 1.6 petrol fiesta zetec s now, its been hassle free for the last 20k (touch wood!) get 42mpg , no turbos , injectors or DMFs to worry about, seems just as fast as the 1.6 hdi too.

However my mother has a 2.0L TDCI ford kuga and has had no problems at all - its done 90k - shes had it from new.
  • The 1.8 diesel is the best of a bad bunch.

Or just buy petrol and never have to worry about much.
