Nexus 7 very slow - options?

My 3 year old nexus 7 is very slow, its the 16Gb one but has loads of spare space still, but seems to be so slow compared to when it was new? I've done all the updates, only use it for surfing/shopping/emails etc but it seems archaic compared to my iphone 6 when on wifi.

Is there any way of speeding it up, as I now need a superfast tablet? Or should i invest in a new one, if so any recommendations please for a superfast tablet?

I run an app called Clean Master that seems to get rid of various bits of junk on my Nexus. Maybe worth a try as there may be loads of old stuff slowing the tablet down. I downloaded from the Play Store.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that's also very slow, would I be able to run Clean Master on it or is rooting needed.

Are there custom versions of Android for my SGT2 that would speed it up, I suspect it's all the Samsung stuff that's causing the slowness in my case.

CCleaner can be used to get rid of stuff that can slow your machine down. Available from the Play store (free)

Would you say CCleaner better than Clean Master? I used to run CCleaner on my previous laptop and found it good. Didn't realise you can get it from the Play store.

Did you install Lolipop 5.0.0? You may find you get some performance back with 5.0.3 - delv in settings/about and you can force it to check for updates.

You can also try wiping the Cache Partition which gets rid of a whole lot of built-up cr*p.

    See here for instructions:
    http://www.robschmuecker.com/how-to-wipe-cache-partition-nexus-7/

My Nexus 7 (2012) was incredibly s-l-o-w after I updated to v5.0 but improved a bit after wiping the cache partition (and then, ultimately, a factory reset).
Since the update to the most recent v5.0.2 it has been pretty good, but still a bit slow sometimes, with a few crashes. Waiting to see if there's a v5.0.3 (not available officially yet) to bring it back up to KitKat level of performance.

Go through your apps and uninstall any you don't use regularly. lots of apps seem to start up and run in the background for no good reason. After that by all means clear the cache partition but also consider doing a system reset but setting up again after can be a pita.
  • I did the same as Mercenary. factory reset and upgrade to 5.0.2 now running ok and no crashes (yet!) before i did that it nearly got binned. Next time there is an update i shall wait a few weeks before upgrading.

I have never used Clean Master but am happy with CCleaner.

    Mine is slow too.....

There's alot of BS out there about speeding them up, loading more apps is NOT going to help, because the real problem is that Asus used a cheap memory controller when they designed the N7. It just does not have the memory bandwidth/speed it needs as the memory starts to fill up.

What you can do is try wiping the cache partition, this is a hidden area of memory used when the system updates itself. I wiped mine and it did make quite a big difference.
I suggest Googling how to do this.
