BBA ispection necessary for FENSA certificate?

We recently had our windows and porch replaced, including 2 external doors, by a local FENSA registered firm.
They have sent us their guarantee ( 10 yr) which is not insurance based ie is only covered by the company.
We have not yet received a FENSA certificate

Today we had a letter from BBA saying they would like to inspect our property. It is not clear whether or not this is mandatory in order to get the FENSA certificate.
As far as I can guess, this is just a random inspection of work done by a FENSA registered firm to check their work is still up to standard.
Or is it?
Can we get the FENSA certificate without this check?

I'm not Fensa registered but I would imagine its to check on the FENSA registered company to make sure they have carried out the work in accordance with the regulations. Personally I have seen plenty of work carried out by FENSA registered companies that never complied with regs. Far better to go with the Local Authority Building Notice system.

if you really have then report them please and get them out of the industry.
As far as the ops question is concerned it isnt a necessity that you have the work checked but if you can i would jsut so you know everything has been done correctly

So if I don't have the inspection, will I receive my Fensa certificate anyway?

Yes, BBA is different to FENSA, But as mentioned above, you have nothing to loose by allowing a BBA inspection. It is an opportunity to get an almost independent inspection of the work. If faults get flagged up then you are entitled to request that they be rectified.

Were I in your position I would welcome the BBA inspection.
  • I'm in a similar position. New windows were installed in November 2015. BBA inspected them in late November and found one toughened pane was not marked with the EN mark. Installer rectified the problem in January. We are still waiting for Fensa cert. It turns out we would have waited forever. BBA no longer do FENSA inspections. These are now done by another organisation, RISA. You can reach RISA on 0207 939 9300. BBA did not handover information on existing cases to RISA so I imagine several cases are now in limbo, as was ours. Shambles!
