Maybe I'm ignorant on this particular subject - but what sort of insurance company would use Worldpay to process payments of several hundred pounds?

And what's wrong with world pay. As opposed to say Sagepay or something. They all use streamline anyway the company in the middle who deals with everything.

All worldpay is a gateway for the user and company to do business. Are you saying world pay aren't reliable or do you have something against them???

My issue with TSB is that rather than saying "we would reject the payment" I was told last week that it would be fine and would be allocated to the bank account associated with the card, and if it hasn't gone through within 15 days, to give them a call and they can search for any attempted refunds etc. and whether the funds may have ended up in a holding account.
When I called back to do this today I spoke to a team who couldn't grasp the situation.
They couldn't grasp that there had been a refund to a card I had used previously, as opposed to refund of the initial transaction.
They were trying to get me to initiate a chargeback. Initial payment to them was for £289, refund was for £455, they couldn't understand this.
They told me they couldn't see if there were any credits attempted on that card, despite every time I spoke to the UK call centre being told that that's what they do.
The UK call centre kept saying one thing, and the foreign dispute centre said another.
I called up 4 times in total and each time I was being told different things by different people.

Nowhere did I say or suggest that there was anything wrong with them or that they were unreliable; I have nothing against them at all. I am at a loss as to why you would accuse me of any of the above.
Simply that I identify Worldpay with mail order and internet retailers, with the majority being small businesses. I would expect a corporate such as an insurance company to have direct interface with one or more banks and use faster payments, or before that, BACS.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

I was told they had to try to refund to card first due to money laundering rules.
I was also told "we don't do BACS, it's card payment, and if that's returned we send it by cheque"
This was about 30 seconds before "oh, hang on, they've BACS'd it to you..."

^^ worldpay is a massive payment processor used by major companies. As mamamoo has pointed out, using the debit card is the first option for KYC/AML reasons.

If you pay for insurance using debt card they will pay out in debt card, as would any other company to avoid fraud.

And you implied world pay weren't capable of handling such payments.

A refund for a card transaction cannot be larger than the original purchase. The only exception to this is winnings from gambling, they process what is known as an 'original credit'. If the refund is larger than the original spend, it may have been flagged as suspicious by the insurance company's bank.

Your bank cannot see a refund that is in transit, but if it is on your TSB debit card then they can see it and make arrangements for it to be credited to your account if that hasn't happened automatically for the reason I outlined in my previous post.
