Equifax credit score errors

Options
Hi

Having been declined for a mobile phone contract, I checked my credit rating

I signed up for the 30-days free trial with Equifax, they also being the agency the phone company used

There were errors on my credit file, such as not there being a bank account linked to my current address, and me not being on the electoral register. It is true that, in the last year, I moved home a few times, and, at the time of being declined, my application to be on the local electoral register had not been confirmed. But still... and not all my addresses were there either...
That was in Nov 2014.

It is now January 2015. After phone calls and emails, my bank account has finally been linked to my address, but my existence on the electoral register has not been updated, even though I have written confirmation from the council and Equifax know I'm on it. The latest from them is that the record will definitely be updated some time in January...

In the meantime, my life is on hold, as my credit rating shows at 200-something

In October 2013, before I moved homes, my credit rating was 967. Yes, 967.

At present, my financial situation is even better than then, so, if anything, my rating should be BETTER THAN 967. As then, I have no loans, overdrafts, debts, defaults, etc... as I am very financially disciplined

I would like help on two fronts, please:

- how do I complain and to whom- i.e. who regulates Equifax- about their delays and inefficiency in updating my record, as the wrong record affect one's life in a real way. Furthermore, my free trial is supposed to expire within January. I really don't want to have to pay a monthly fee to keep the account open because I have to keep checking that they have updated my record

- how do I make my credit score go back to 967, or better, as it really should be

Thank you kindly

  • I believe all electoral roll updates are done in January, so not much you can do there.

2-3 months to update your bank details may be a little long, but not hugely.

And lastly, don't worry about the score. It's fictional and no one sees it but you.

What date has your council confirmed that you are on the electoral roll from?

You can get a copy of your statutory credit file for £2 a time after you have cancelled the free trial. It doesn't show the score, just the statutory data - which is all a potential lender would see as well.

You cannot make your score go back to a particular number. Don't worry about the score a credit reference agency will sell to you. A potential lender will view the statutory data on one or more of your credit files, and the information on your application and make a lending decision based on that.
