Piped music in shops.

I don't mind music in shops, particularly if it is something I like. The local Pound shops seems to play pretty good stuff (well in my view). When I was in there the other day there was old music playing - Spandeau Ballet, Culture Club are two I remember and I was singing under my breath as I would never subject anyone to the awful noise I make. There was a male customer singing along quite loudly though!
That's like my local pound shop - can't really slate their taste in music!
My old work it wasn't too bad for music unless you were on reception. I would be on there for 2 hours every day with the same CD blaring out, and it was usually B-sides from other singles.. I said I was going to change it on my last day and put a Slipknot album in there but I never got around to it!
The thing I hated was the fruit machines making the same noise every 30 seconds. We had about 7 of the same machine and they were never in sync. And they were awfully loud. Our Rainbow Twins born 17th April 2016

A lot of clothing shops play loud, current/popular music as a way to draw in the type of customer (mainly based on age) they wish to be using or wearing their brand(s). Superdry and Tripple S are prime examples of these.
I've also noticed that the vast majority of shoppers in my local Asda are often singing along to whatever music they're playing. I quite enjoy a bit of a singalong when food shopping, it's an otherwise boring task.0 -
In my work we have finally got some decent music, it used to be the same old carp playing over and over, the words didn't even make sense. We now have something that plays decent up to date tunes. Makes the lull in between customers more pleasurable.Feb NSD's 2/10 under my belt.

H&M are the worst for loud, horrible music
i was in a large Primark the other week and I know they had music on, but i didn't notice it at all which was nice.
i think a shop with no music feels dull; a little bit of background noise is nice.
my local Tesco has a music system right at the front of the store blaring out and then different music piped in. gawd knows why. it's awful. prefer Morrisons.0 -
I feel like that in pubs. You go in for a drink and a natter and can hardly hear yourself think.
I don't mind if its full of kids or a wine bar etc, but the local pub :eek:Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -
Loud is a subjective thing though, I had to deal with a customer last week who's idea of loud was a whisper and had no problems in complaining despite there being other more important issues at the time. Polar opposite to the OP I actively avoid shops with no music playing, they have no soul to them & are actually very bad as you can hear every little conversation happening.
I get that some stores are overly loud, but for the most part stores are nowhere near as bad as you'd think, it's just that it doesn't please you - and ultimately the music isn't designed to please you. (It's there to create atmosphere & to help avoid the staff "feeling" the working day as there's something in the background!)Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -

Oh this. We have permanently boycotted one pub trying to be a disco doing this. Another one is on the the verge, they even blast the music out on speakers outside so the smokers don't miss out!
Stupidly loud music so you can't hear anyone talk does not create an atmosphere!!0 -
Must be nice to have nothing else to worry about :-/0

Many years ago, I worked in the entertainment department at Woolworths. We had a lovely stereo system and we could play what we liked (within reason!)
It was quite handy at store closing time when the last few stragglers didn't get the hint to go home. One of our Saturday staff had the bright idea of putting on some very loud heavy metal, it really did make people move a bit more quickly!
At Christmas, instead of the endless Slade and Cliff Richard drivel, we would play a Disney singalong album, almost all of the customers would strut and sing along to "King of the Swingers", without even realising that they were doing so. The "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack was very popular, as was "The Sound of Music". We used to put the radio on in the afternoons, the Steve Wright show always went down well, with the staff at least.
I do find that hearing the same songs in the supermarket for weeks on end can be a bit depressing, and I'm only in there for an hour or so a week. Goodness knows how the staff can bear it!"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0
