First Directory account - car breakdown cover

Has anyone ever used it? Is it better to get it independently?

My phone insurance is going to cost £10 a month anyway, so I was considering paying £15 a month for the First Directory account. It is worth it for me, as I will be going on holiday this year, need breakdown cover and mobile phone insurance.

Here's an overview from their website:

Motor Breakdown Cover with AGA International SA
This 24 hour service helps give you peace of mind covering you as a driver or passenger of any eligible vehicle, for breakdowns at home or on any road in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man. Cover includes emergency roadside repairs and local recovery to the nearest suitable garage. In addition we will provide national recovery of the vehicle to any UK destination, if we are unable to arrange a prompt local repair.

We will not cover:
The cost of labour and/or parts at any garage to which the vehicle is taken.
Claims where your vehicle is being used for commercial or business purposes or is a motorcycle.
Missing or broken keys. We will try to provide the details of a locksmith but you will need to pay for the work carried out.
Replacing tyres or windows.

Motor Breakdown Assistance is underwritten by AGA International SA and administered in the UK by Mondial Assistance (UK) Limited. Policy Terms and Conditions apply.

Lots cheaper with the Nationwide FlexPlus, which is just a tenner for breakdown and mobile phone and travel insurance and extended warranty for appliances. If you keep £2,500 in the account all month long, it only costs you less than £6 as you get 3% interest on up to £2,500, too.

    http://www.nationwide.co.uk/products/current-accounts/landing-page/flexplus?ppc=1&cmpid=PaidSearch_114490&gclid=CNWn1rKRlMMCFQvKtAoduSYADQ

The T&Cs of all the covers look ok to me but obviously you need to check for yourself whether you are happy with them.

I have the FlexPlus because the insurance covers meet my needs. I haven't yet had any reason to claim though so I can't speak from experience about claims. And I hope I never will be able to ;)

Generally, this is a delusion as there are many other accounts that pay interest higher than 0%, not to mention those that pay 3%+.
  • im a strong believer that the only thing you need from a recovery service is for your car and passangers to be brought back home from anywhere in the uk, I don't want to be took to one of there approved garages 100s of miles from home, I just want the car brought back to my home where I can fix it myself or if its a big job use my local garage, the onward travel is no good if your going camping in the middle of nowhere in Scotland.

there is only so much they can do at the roadside and as its impossible to carry spare parts for every car, fixing at the roadside is more or less near impossible.

Thank you very much, grumbler, I am not any more deluded than you are. I have maxed all the 3, 4, 5 and 6% accounts. But even if I had not, absolutely nothing wrong in what I said in post #2 is wrong. Please check your facts.

This is exactly what you get.

its the if we are unable to arrange a prompt local repair that would worry me, the aa t&cs recover you to any destination if they cant fix at the road side, which I would say is slightly better.

I would not want to be dumped at garage to have my eye balls ripped out by over the top repair bills, as youd have no choice in the matter to pay what ever they wanted to charge, if you wanted your car fixed miles from home (if they are able to arrange a prompt and local repair that is)

id be reading the t&cs very carefully before deciding.

You made a general statement: "If you keep £2,500 in the account all month long, it only costs you less than £6 as you get 3% interest on up to £2,500, too." - without knowing anything about financial position of the OP.

I have to admit that I did misread "less than £6" as "£6 less".
However, if, unlike you, the OP doesn't have all 3-6% accounts filled, then it will cost him full £10, not "less than £6".

    What about 2% accounts?
FD ISA springs to mind that pays 1.5% on £30K+.
    3%*0.8-1.5%=0.9%
    £2500*0.9%/12=~£2
    £10-£2=£8, not "less than £6".

So, what facts do I have to check?

can't be bothered to fence with words with someone who seems to only want to criticise others.
