Hope this is the right section please move if not...

Our hot water isn't working but our heating is, had a plumber round he wants £230, £170 for the part and £60 for labour, but on eBay the parts seem to be around £50-£80.

If anyone knows anything about this, is this because he will need anything else to go with the diverter valve or is he just adding on costs?

valve*** to title whoops! We have an AlphaCB24x boiler.

What does another plumber quote you?

What will the plumber quote you for labour if you supply your own part?

Had £280 and another guy won't quote without coming out to see it but then wants to charge £45...understand why but then your stuck between a rock and a hard place to use them.

Havn't got much choice but to use the first.

Probably needs a flush and inhibitor too, but hey I'm not a plumber, does he give you a warranty(loose term) ? My plumber/c.h. engineer is very good and all his work is guaranteed for at least a year, plus he(mine) would include a service at the same cost. Just my observations really
  • A replacement diverter valve sometimes comes with all the bits you need and sometimes doesn't, but it's usually only a few fibre washers you'll need extra.

Replacing a diverter valve can be a fairly fiddly process, involving a boiler drain-down and re-fill/set-up, and can take a few hours, so he may be overcharging you for the part but undercharging for the labour, £60 labour sounds very cheap.

Also it might not be the diverter valve itself, some have bypass capilliary tubes for pressure equalisation and these get easily clogged stopping the hot water working, so there may be a bit of fault-finding to do.
