'We're sorry - your meter wasn't set up quite right
Unfortunately, a tecnical issue with some pay as you go meters has meant you've been paying us more than you should for your gas. You won't be out of pocket - you're getting a full refund. You've paid us too much, so we're repaying that to you how. And to cover things while we're still fixing the problem, we'eve worked out how much you're likely to over pay between now and the end of June - which is when the problem should be fixed. So, you're getting a total of £50. We'll send a messag to your meter to correct the information, so just keep topping up as normal.'
The bottom section is a barcode instruction for the Paypoiint to give £50 cash.
I know it's a nice thing - but I don't understand it - what about all the overpayments I've made - which meter is it - I'm dual-fuel with British Gas and both on top up meters. Will I really get all the overpayment back? Does the adjustments they talk about cover the past payments?
I'd appreciate any helpful thoughts - thank you for taking the time to read and reply.

We received the same letter this morning ( though the cash back amount was different) and upon presenting it at the local PayPoint outlet, after checking the required documents asked for our gas card and used the refund to top it up (when asked the manageress said that's what they had to do) i'm sure one of the instructions on the bottom rear of the voucher told the shop keeper to ensure they had enough cash in the till before issuing the refund. Now is that a mistake by the shopkeeper or an instruction from British Gas as in either case we didn't receive the cash . Being monthly paid we would have left the refund till the end of the month before topping up not the middle of the month when a few pound extra would have been useful! Will this be the same when they refund what we've over payed the last few years? Is this a case of British Gas giving with one hand and snatching straight back with the other ?0

Thanks for that Cardew
Reading through the article it states under British gas it hopes the payment will be as cash (obviously not then) and re-reading the letter a couple more times i can see the amount is for projected and historical payment (though not to clear with a quick read through) though it does not state on the letter that it will be as a fuel top up, I think the letter could have been better worded.
thanks for your link.0 -
It will probably be the prepay overpayment. I think they calculate it at 24p per top up with a limit of around the £100 mark0
