Surface wood laminate flooring advice

Hi
We moved into our house a year ago and have wooden surface laminate flooring from the previous owner, which we cannot afford to replace as its all in the hall and living room.
It's very scratched all over and in the scratches is deep dirt. They had a dog and four kids so it has had a lot of wear and tear.
Is there any way i can get the dirt out of the scratches? I mope the floor regularly and while this gives it a surface clean it's not a deep clean that can get into the scratches.
Can a surface wood laminate floor be sanded down?
Any advice would be great.
Thanks

I'm afraid you're almost certainly out of luck
The surface of laminate is a plastic layer so trying to sand it won't work & will make it look a LOT worse. There might be some way it can be refinished, but it would be very dependent on the brand & would also most likely be more expensive than simply replacing.
Unfortunately the best thing would probably be to save up & replace.
Oh, and wet mopping isn't usually advised for laminate - over time this can cause it to swell & split. A damp microfibre mop at most, and definitely not a steam mop...0 -

Hi if it's real wood laminate then yes it can be sanded, check to see the depth of the real wood as most will sand and look as good as new:)The person who never makes a mistake never learns anything.0 -

I'm not aware of "real wood" - is that the same as engineered wood flooring?
That's quite different to typical laminate, hence my advice above... Be very cautious at any rate before getting the sander out!0 -
Forget sanding it.
Have you tried giving it a light scrub with a damp brush or scourer, perhaps in a discrete area at first.0
