It's this. The presumption that I'm ok with taking care of their post without even asking.

I use mail redirection as a matter of courtesy for the people who are moving in (and I've seen the house they're moving to - they can afford £35 for six months redirection).

Oh, and the wife won't let me put it in the bin. Apparently it's "mean" and because it's not my property I don't have the right to bin it.

Maybe when they phone you say, 'post, sorry we didn't get any of your post'.

Might make them think twice about worth of the redirection :)

Regardless of your decision - and I personally agree with you that it's a bit of a cheek - what I WOULD do is fill in the mailing preference service online with details of any addressees that come thru your letter box, so that at least in 3 months or so, most of the junk mail will have been cut out. In the meantime, I personally would shove all the mail, junk or otherwise, in a box and keep it to one side for them - but it's up to them to collect.

After 3 months or so I then just scribble "R.S." on each new letter that arrives and pop it back in the post box.

Unless they've gone to the trouble of setting up royal mail redirection, in which case I try to forward on any non-junk (non-"mailsort") letters which have slipped through the redirection net.
  • I bought my house over 10years ago. Still get post for last owner, inc. Xmas cards from their friends!
when life gives you lemons, stick them in your top & pretend you have pointy boobs.

They left a note with their new address, and asked us to call them if any post arrives so they can come and pick it up

Rather than get stressed about the post, why didn't you just say "No"?

Or said that you would put anything that came on one side and they could call occasionally to pick anything up that's there?

If they haven't paid for redirection, they must know that post will be arriving for them at their old address.

In that case give all their mail to your wife and let her sort out the problem, job done :T
    It's someone else's fault.

I think this word is being stretched a bit if after 10 years they still dont know where they moved to:D
  • The people we bought our house from didn't do a redirection or bother notifying anyone of their change of address...they seem to have done a bunk and left debts behind (which I gathered when a bailiff turned up early one morning looking for their car!). For the first three months I marked things 'not known at this address' and put it in a post box but mail kept coming (no one seemed to take any notice of the returned mail as the same organisations keep sending things) so now it all goes into the recycling bin unopened.

If they cared about someone getting hold of and misusing their information they would have sorted it out so their mail got to their new address. If they can't be bothered to protect their information I really don't see why I should be so I have no problem with it going in the bin.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

Because the request was left for us to be found when we got the keys to the house. We didn't have an option of saying no when they asked.

While I applaud the sentiment, I have to listen to her [STRIKE]complain [/STRIKE] talk about having to deal with it...

If they left their phone number so that you could tell them when post had arrived, you could have phoned them and told them how you would like it to work.

You only need send them one thing. An invoice for your services as a re-director, which would be twice the cost of Royal Mails service.
