Can someone please help?

I bought an Hitachi 50HYT62U smart TV and the sound quality is horrendous. So I bought a Sony soundbar HTC60BT but the digital optical cable that comes with it has a tiny little funny shaped connector and doesn't fit the back of my TV. Please can someone tell me what I need to buy? I am a techno moron so please be specific. Thank you for your help.

A cursory look at the specs suggests that the Hitachi 50HYT62U does not have an optical audio output.
Have a look in the manual for TOS Link to confirm.

In which case you'll have to use a pair of phono leads.

Thank you. There's nothing in the manual about links - it's barely in English so it's difficult to understand. What is a TOS link? Is that a jack?

Digital optical will be TOSLink, as penrhyn says. At the end will be either a little square connector, that only goes in one way, or something the shape of a headphone plug. Both of these may have protection on them to protect the optical cable end.
But if you've bought this without checking if your TV has optical out (look at the back of it!)...
