Strange my Mondeo's still good after 170,000 miles.

    Its how you treat them.

Can you find any car that doesnt have a forum full of people asking about problems with their cars?

Honda Jazz excluded because those owners think the teletext button is the internet. :)

I don't really think a sample of 1 (especially when it's not yours so it's second hand data) is enough to make such a sweeping decision.

Are you not buying another car and if so it would be safer to part ex it.

If you 're being honest and describe it as having an undiagnosable, unfixable fault I would imagine that will knock a massive amount off the value. From looking at Autotrader similar ones to yours are going for around £5000 (presuming it's a 1.6 petrol). There's a couple of Cat D ones for £3800. I wouldn't expect much more than that for yours as the new owner will want enough of a reduction in price to safeguard against the bill for fixing it.

Part ex or try We Buy Any Car. Just watch WBAC as they will take your eyes if they can.

EDIT: On a practical note even if a private buyer cannot come back to you from a legal standpoint, they can always come back to you as they have your address from the V5. When the sale is arranged you won't know if it's Father O'Reilly or Psycho Steve coming to visit you. I never sell a car privately without disclosing every little niggle.

Exactly, people buy on the cheap instead of paying a little more for a well kept vehicle then moan when they fail. Buy cheap, buy twice
  • Its how you treat them.

It's not all about how you treat them - some cars are prone to certain issues, regardless of maintenance or pampering.

    Madza 6 DPF issues
    Mazda RX8 hot start issues
Mondeo TDCi injectors and DMF issues
    etc etc

Some do last forever with no bother - but if a car is known for a certain issue, no amount of maintenance will prevent the possibility of it happening.
  • Some codes can only be read via the dash, google ford dash test, things like speed sensor faults and dash faults which do cause this issue.
Anything that communicates with the dash often does not show up on code readers but will in the dashboard DTC diagnostic test.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

Totally agree all cars have sort of faults, they are mechanical machines after all maintaining them does play an huge important part but like you say, some cars are just really badly manufactured, bad design of certain components hence the reason we have recalls.

No, buy badly, buy twice - and you can buy badly (or well) at any price point.

    Fords aren't that bad.
Of my last 4 cars, 3 have been Fords (Mondeo, Fiesta, Focus) and they've been nothing but brilliant.
