I have a lot of sympathy for you - these mistakes are easily made.
However I think your directing your energy and anger at the wrong source here.
You have contact details for the company A where the money was paid into - I would keep phoning this man, be persistent and don't let him fob you off. From what you've said, I'm not completely satisfied that he's telling you the complete truth here but you seem to have given up after just one call and accepted what's he said. Also keep trying company B...because the fact is, one of them has got your money somewhere haven't they? I would keep saying this to both of them and tell you them that you will not give up until they properly investigate this. Unfortunately if you want your money back your going to have to keep pushing hard.
As for Santander - have they confirmed if this is a live account with a customer refusing to pay the money back? Or is it a closed account? If closed, the money should bounce back. If a customer's not paying it back..well..there's not a lot Santander can do in that situation and I think you're getting angry at the wrong source.0 -
If the company was taken over, so was the account.
I the new owner failed to inform the bank about the new address and phone number, it's hardly a surprise that they don't respond.
Send them a Letter Before Action with the account details, giving them, say, 2 weeks to locate the account and return the money. Then submit a claim to the Small Claims Court
Banks have no powers to help you.0 -
The great advantage you have here is that you haven't paid the money into a random account where you have no idea who it belongs to.
In your position I would be on the phone to company A and company B until they provided me with answers more satisfactory than you've received so far. One of them has to have the money and they can't get away from it. Have company B confirmed whether what company A told you is true and the account was moved to them? They should at least be able to tell you this.0 -

The best you can hope for is that the wrong payment will be picked up at an audit.
This was your mistake. Hopefully, given time, it won't prove to be an expensive one.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
I agree with what grumbler has posted. If company B are denying knowledge of the account then you or they can use the Lost Accounts website to locate it:
