Anyone else got a problem updating their Garmin?

I have a Garmin 1490T which is overdue for an update of its maps (it came with a life time guarantee for UK and Europe). In theory I just plug it in to my PC, identify it and myself as a registered user and off it goes. Well it used to but now it doesn't. Basically it displays that it has connected to the pc and then nothing happens.

So I then tried installing an updated version of their Garmin Express installer. It failed. I then tried using their Mapupdater for PCs. It just hangs. I am running windows 7 Pro 64 bit. Any ideas?

The installing program has always failed for me in the past.

The last time I updated I had to log in via the garmin website and do it manually. From memory I had to register the device, download the map update file and then follow the update instructions from there.

Hope that helps, sorry not more detailed as it was some time ago, I'm probably overdue the next update.

I also have Lifetime updates on my old Nuvi 750T - every 3 months or so.

In December I installed the latest/current version of UK & Europe maps - version 2015.20

I haven't experienced any hassle at all.
  • try using the garmin webupdater and not the garmin express. I used it for my gamrin 1490t and no problem.

I had problems with mine last time I updated maps, in the end I successfully used GarminMapUpdater (link is a direct download).

I have not had problems before but this time I plugged it into my PC logged in and clicked on update and instead of updating it just hung. then i tried via garminexpress which is clearly rubbish. will have another try with mapupdater later .

When I had updating problems a couple of years ago, I found Garmin Enquiries on 0808 238 0000 were a great help, and went to a lot of trouble to get my unit working properly again.
