Reported costs by the media, but i bet they were not the true costs of manufacturing. i have worked in manufacturing and in retail and know what true costs to manufacture goods.

what you need to look at is

    Manufacturing costs are X
This sold to Distributor for Y to give z profit
This then sold to wholesaler for xy to give zc profit
This then sold to Retailer for C who sells to enduser for C to give P profit

so to OP that camera would most likely cost £2 to manufacture

It was a report done by an industry research company and then picked up by the mass market. Obviously based on estimates than true facts but having looked at may similar reports from Gartner etc in the past they are generally in the right ball park

The above is also a very simplistic one size fits all. Not all products follow the same number of layers of distribution. The difference between wholesale price and retail price is not the profit but their margin as there are operational costs for the retailer that must also be factored in. There are also other distribution models that dont involve the retailer buying the products for example instead renting shelf space and passing on 100% of the sales other than VAT
  • I didn't think it was possible, but I've found a higher spec, for the same price.

Same price, same zoom, but 14.1 MPs.

When you consider that Home Bargains are selling "kiddy cameras", with just 2.1 MP, and only internal memory (120 images), for £6-99, these (as "proper" cameras) have got to be a much better option.

My first digital camera (a Kodak DC210) cost £400 - about 18 years ago - It had a 1Mpixel CCD sensor and I had to buy a (HUGE) 1Mb compact flash separately for it (I think that cost an extra £25) - I could take 12 photos on a single pair of batteries before they went flat !
Hasn't technology moved on over the years ?
  • And yet my horizons are still always off
