Windows Live Mail and ._pdf

Anyone else getting this?

Windows Live Mail (I think 2012) is changing an attached document extension from .pdf to ._pdf. (underscore pdf) when sending. This is happening with all attachments (.xlsx becomes ._xlsx)

It seems to be doing this to lots of people's computers in the last month.

It becomes an issue when using XP because the files will NOT open without going looking for a default program.

Windows 7 and Windows 8 seem to be able to handle dodgy extension.

I think this may be a 2-dot thing. The senders, whoever they may be, are leaving dots at the end of file names. WLM seems to be converting these from file-st..pdf to file-st._pdf.
I need to do a few tests to confirm this.
