Avon question

Hi,

My partner is an Avon rep and has been told by them that she would need to declare herself as being self employed with the Inland Revenue.

She only make about £50-75 per month from Avon and so would it really be worth the hassle i.e. N.I. contributions & tax returns etc?

She also has a part time job and being a mother recieves family tax credit, would declaring being self employed affect her tax code or benefits?

Steve.

I know if she earns over £300 she needs to declare it to the inland revenue but I am not sure about everything else

I think you need to declare it to HMRC (not been called Inland Revenue for a while now) but can get an exemption certificate as not earning enough to pay the NI etc.

Yes, she will need to declare it as she will have to fill in a self assement tax return at the end of the year - it will then show how much tax is due - if anything. better be safe than sorry if she aslready has a part time job.

On another note, although she is not earning enough but it might be worth payingher NI (I think calss 1 contributions) asfor the sale of £2 a week it covers you if she is not able to work and can claim sickness benefits - something she probably cannot get with her part time job and certainly not with Avon. I pay mine even though i do not earn enough - it just helps having peace of mine knowing I am covered just in case. it would also mean if she gets pregnant again she can get Maternity Pay.
