Okay, so the standard passport is fairly pricey at £66 .... but the passport office are fast. I posted mine without check and send on Monday 23rd, it arrived at processing centre on Tuesday 24th, my new passport was made on Wednesday 25th, I got my old one back on Friday 27th and my new passport arrived on Saturday 28th.
Thats right. Less than a week. Top marks!

That's pretty good, but...
When I renewed my passport in 1984, I got the new one by return of post. Literally!0 -
I digress slightly, but does anyone know why,if you lose a passport that is handed in to the Police Station, they have to send it back and you have to apply for a new one?0

No. If handed into the police station they have to destroy it. This is because there is a chance your passport could have been copied if it has been out of your hands etc and if you don't apply for the new one then all the details on the copied one would be correct (like issue number etc) so they ake you get a new one to stop fraud.Debts: Gym £[strike]465.75[/strike] Student account [strike]£1039.88[/strike] Overdraft [strike]£129.00[/strike] Credit Card [strike]£2772.22[/strike] Loan [strike]£6222.01 [/strike]

ovetta2001 is right, it happened to me a few months ago. I had actually dropped it on my own driveway, and it was out of my possession for a few hours max, but it still had to be destroyed and I had to apply from scratch.
The passport office were really helpful then as well though, because I had a visa for my old passport and there was a whole lot of faffing around to get it reissued. They pulled out all the stops to get it reissued quickly so I could get it sorted out. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0
