Informing Freeholder of Planned Extension

Hi,
I wonder if anyone has experience of this...?
We own our house which is on a 999 year lease for the land. We pay nominal ground rent. Now we are planning to extend - single-storey to side and rear - and believe we should notify the freeholder.
No doubt they will want to charge us some administrative fee for considering the request, but are there other pitfalls anyone can warn us about. (The landlord is Shenstone Properties who have been mentioned here before, with regard to buying out the freehold...interesting reading.)
Any info gratefully received.
