Hi Everyone,
I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question.
If I'm in the wrong place please re-direct me...
I have just received an email from microsoft entitled -

"Your Classic version of MICROSOFT is closing. You need to upgrade now"
Hello,

The Classic version of MICROSOFT will be replaced by our new version on 15th JAN 2015. So it's time to upgrade, before you lose your email access.

When you upgrade your MICROSOFT
Your email service won't be affected and you'll keep all your old contacts, folders and messages. Plus you'll get:
  • faster email
  • the latest spam protection
  • unlimited email storage.

How you can upgrade your account

Click on the link below and follow the instructions. You'll also need to agree to some new terms and conditions.
Thanks for choosing MICROSOFT,
Satya Nadella
Microsoft Corporation, CEO

Alarm bells are ringing in my head as I have had phone call scams very similar to this.
Does anyone know if this is genuine or is it a scam.

As always with links in emails, don't click it (yet)! Move your mouse over it and look in the status bar or tooltip (depending on your browser/email client) where the link will take you. This answers your question in 99% of cases.

Yep, as above, link is a fake. Plus, there's no product that is simply called 'Microsoft'. It is the name of the company.

    Many thanks for your replies.
I am so releeved I didn't go any further.

I have deleted the link from the post.
  • I had a very similar message requiring me to log into my account.

I hovered over the login button and the link showed as something unusual - some marketing/ad website clearly not microsoft related so I reported it as phishing. Hopefully they'll act on it so that others less clued up dont get hit.

depends what you reports as Phishing as 9/10 the URL in the link is an innocent site that has been hacked..

I have cleaned many of these hacked sites in my line of business

they hack a site and then place a file/folder in their. the only way to report these is using the full headers and report to email to spamcop

    Just had another.

"Your account will be closed in 2 days unless you sign in here"

Hovered over the link and it referred to some site called Ocampoyia.

General rule of thumb = if an email asks for your login details - ignore/report it.

I really like the ones from the banks you don't have an account with that are either going to suspend or close the bank account you don't have unless you sign into the account you don't have.

Yes, but then the owner of the domain of that hacked website wouldn't be the same as the owner of the service the email is supposedly coming from.
