I actually rent while most of my neighbours own. Those who bought property did so with an 'allocated parking space' while those who rent also have the same. However in order to USE that allocated parking space we need to pay additional maintenance of £1800 per year.

Sounds like you're in luck then. Move when the contract is up, live and learn.

Would be interesting to know how it affects car insurance, as 20 minutes could get you in a different postcode.

It wouldn't make any difference as you only disclose that you park on the road, you don't specify a certain road.

I insure with Tesco, the first line when you apply for a quote
Can you answer 'yes' to ALL these statements about you and your car?

default-common-spacer.pngI keep my car at my home address overnight
20 minutes walk away is not your home address.

Do any of the reasons below prevent you from saying 'yes'?

    • You keep your car somewhere else, but not at your home address
    • Your car has been modified other than for disabled access
    • Your car has been imported from Europe
If you can't answer 'yes' because of one of the above reasons please call us on 0845 671 5680 and we'll see what we can do.

They usually ask where the car will be parked at night and during the day ie. home postcode or alternative postcode.

Anyone parking on the street (unless using numbered bays) will not be parking at their hone postcode, it isn't at all an unusual situation.

Don't be silly, when you put down you park on the street that implies outside or near your home.

Exactly, near your home is a different postcode, that is why on street parking is often a little dearer as the car may be parked in riskier areas compared to the actual street the owner lives on alongside the increased risk of damage.

On street is actually cheaper in a lot of cases, try ringing your insurance up and telling them you park two street away because you can't get outside your house and see where that gets you.

I did for years, well two streets would have been fantastic, it was never an unsual issue. It was in a very rough area as well.

It's a matter of degree. If you sometimes have to park a couple of hundred yards from your house, or on the next street, that's certainly not an unusual situation, but if you never actually park within half a mile of your home I think an insurer would be quite justified in saying that you're not keeping the car at your home address, as you claimed that you were. Especially if the street where you're actually parking is less salubrious than the street where you live.
