Usually you get noise from the bearing. I had one fail with nothing more than a flash of the ABS light one day then 3 weeks later still no noise until i pulled away and it collapsed.

Nor pulling away hard either. Parked about 40 feet from where i needed to stop and give way anyway.

At least the OP noticed the noise.

I've been in a few cars with people when the wheel bearing was mega noisy. They had just assumed the humming noise was from the road and turned the stereo up

Going off topic - what are the magical Bridgestone tyres that your car needs, and what car?!

As soon as you can hear the familiar whirr of a failing wheel bearing, you have anywhere between two minutes and nine months before it fails completely!

So you think Halfrauds didn't spot it OR there was nothing wrong????

Halfrauds probably did even bother checking anything. They only use these things to get customers in through the door.

I mean where will you now go in months when the brakes are supposedly needing changing? ;) That nice guy at Halfrauds who didn't try to rip you off? ;)

I had two rear bearings done recently and two or three of us had all concurred it was the rear bearings that were whining. But the noise was still there, £600 later for the back axle off and rear diff stripped all fine and like brand new except for the pesky pinion bearing.

I had a bearing go, everything fine, 20 yards from my destination a sudden crunching noise from front wheel, had no notice or noise before this happened even though the RAC guy insisted I must have heard something before it collapsed
