Virgin Broadband - Do I still need protection?

Hi guys
Just gone onto Virgin broadband package at £10 per month. Not sure if I need any extra protection. It comes with PC Guard which every now and then tells me its found spyware and would I like to delete them - which I do. It seems to have anti virus and firwall built in so I'm assuming I don't need anything else????? Am I right???
The only reason I ask is that my connection was running really slow this morning and I used to run spybot or adaware on my old machine when this happened and it would normally be ok then. Obviously I have nothing like this on my new system but do I need it?
Cheers all!

I would recommend installing both Spybot and Adaware as well as a decent AV.
The Virgin stuff should pick up most things, but there's always a chance one or two could sneak through and cause problems.
Installing your own will give you a "belt-and-braces" setup.
I'd also get further advice on installing your own firewall.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -
I would never trust an ISP's virus protection
go with:
Steganos or Kaspersky (pretty much same thing - steganos cheaper)
or NOD32 - I use this one
Also get A squared - the only free trojan hunter I'm aware of
Comodo is winning a lot of plaudits as being the best FREE firewall goingHate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing
Do little and often
Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying :mad:0 -
Thanks both for your above replies. I assume that if I download and install my own Firewall and AV I will have to disable the PC guard that comes with Virgin's Broadband. Does anyone know anything about this and will that cause any problems with Virgin?0

I've been with VM for the last 2 years (also their £10/month BB) & this is what I've been using with no security problems or conficts - all free:
* AVG Free [uninstall PC Guard]
* Ad-Aware
* SpywareBlaster [cookie blocking here may need to be disabled if your Quidco/similar site transactions are not getting tracked]
* McAfee SiteAdvisor
* MailWasher for emails [download the last free multi-account version 2beta28 from here]
The above together with Windows own firewall & Defender.
You may want to add a dedicated 3rd-party firewall as the others have suggested. I feel I'm vigilant enough not to have to use one, & I also feel it slows down my PC a shade. G0 -
Hi Anyone out there?
I've just downloaded Ad-Aware as recommended to start adding extra security to my PC and now a pop up box has appeared asking for lincence information in particular my serial number? and unlock key? and asking me to select licence type? I only wanted to download the free version of ad-aware which i'm sure I did do. I followed the link from the malware/spyware removal thread.
Does anyone know what I'm supposed to do?
Cheers!0 -
Sloganjerry, appears you're satisfied with SUPERAntiSpyware then. G0

Add spybot and adaware but you certainly don't want to have another AV as well as pc guard - because you will have serious problems. If you don't like pc guard uninstall it.
StebizAsk me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0 -
PCGuard is dreadful and shouldn't be anywhere near your PC.
Install a decent firewall, decent virus protection and decent anti-spyware.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
I have been using AVG from www.grisoft.com for years along with zonelabs free firewall version + adaware and spybot, and never had a problem. I also have Virgin 20Mbit but wouldnt dream of using their stuff lol:money:"INSIDE EVERY OLDIE IS A YOUNGSTER, WONDERING,"WHERE THE F*** DID LIFE GO?""0
