Buying an extended 5 year guarantee on tv from Currys?

Hi folks,

I am no fan usually of buying an extended guarantee for any item particularly computers, but just bought a tv from Currys and got a 5 year year guarantee for £89, last old tv CRT I paid £80 but never had cause to use it.

I thought £89 is a pretty good deal for 5 years and also accidental damage, but I suppose the devil is in the detail if I ever have to claim.

I know argos are twice the price for a 3 year guarantee.

Anyone had hassle free if you unfortunately had to claim under the currys guarantee?

Thanks

  • I've never bought a TV from Currys/Dixons/PC World , mind you never had a problem with a TV less than 10 years old either.

My parents bought an LCD telly from Currys with an extended warranty, and about six months before it ended the TV started locking up solid just after power on and then randomly through the evening. Currys took it away for a few days, pronounced it unfixable and they got a replacement (which is obviously better spec as it's four years newer) under the warranty.

My CRT TV was from a similar outlet (now gone) and failed within the extended warranty period. I was expecting it to be no good as the retailer had shut down, but it turned out it was underwritten by someone else and a local TV place came out and fixed it. Though I must admit I was hoping he wouldn't be able to get parts and would have to give me a new replacement.

What I did notice was that while we were negotiating the price on the TV+warranty bundle, although I'd effectively talked them down to £25 for a five-year warranty (this is a few years back, obviously, as it's a CRT), the warranty was on the receipt for full price and the TV carried all the discount. I believe that's to do with the commission payable, but it made no difference to me.
