Worried about landing myself in more debt

Hi, I'm new here and just after a little bit of advice.
Long story short, my ex partner landed me in loads of debt. Nothing has been paid towards these for the past 6 years. He wasn't working and then left me, so being a single parent and paying an extra £400 a month for another one of his mistakes I can't afford any extra payments.
My question is - I want to start getting my credit back on track but I'm scared that if I apply to get my credit file that I will then have debt collectors knocking at the door. Would they be able to track me down??
Thanks

When was each of the debts last had a payment made for ?
6 years is the limit so if it was say 6 years last Nov a payment was made then they are off your credit file. Can't answer your other question but don't open the door to them if they do knock on the door.0 -
If you can't afford extra payments taking credit out is a bad idea anyway. If it was over 6 years most debt will have dropped off, some defaults may be present. Personally I'd get on the electoral roll and wait until you can afford to pay more, if you take credit out you'll get in a mess.0

Thank you
Last payments to any of them were in September ish of 2008. I will apply for my credit file then and see what happens0 -
I am on the electoral roll, I was thinking of getting a credit card - I know they are a high percentage if you have bad credit and spend £5 a month on it and pay it straight back. Its the only way I can think of to build my credit score back up0

Hope you can remove any connection to yourself from ex. Let us know how it is looking!0

He was crafty, nothing was ever in his name. Only ever in mine. So I have spent the last 4 years looking over my shoulder, waiting for the letters, phonecalls to my mum's and even debt collectors.
The £400 a month is because, my parents let us buy their house, we had enough money at the time as that was 8 years ago but the mortgage payments were so high, the house nearly got repossessed. Luckily for my parents, a landlord brought it and he let them stay.
I can barely afford it but I feel so guilty, its untrue.0 -
I have just looked t credit report with call credit and there isn't anything special on there. Did one with Equifax and omg....my score is 240.
I think I have been lucky the last date for anything was the 8th Jan 2009 so that would be 6 years.
There is a credit card on there, that is being paid and its up to date that I have no idea about... the linked address is where we used to live so that would be my ex.
How do I go about getting that taken off?? Overall it said I owed £4000 which isn't as bad as I thought, but I don't really want to contact these people incase it ends up being a lot more if that makes sense, the smaller amounts I could pay off at a push and the 2 bigger ones in installments0 -
The score means nothing.. No lender uses that to evaluate you.
Lenders have their own ratings which they wont tell you.
One company may like people that have had bad credit and sorted themselves out. Another may run away.
Any negatives on the report still showing? Missed payments?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
It shows missed payments etc from the beginning of the credit until the last payment or in my case the default month.
It does obviously show the limit or outstanding balance and then the default amount. A couple of these are for £50.
If I paid these off now would it still show as a default or would it be cleared off my file?0
