Not sure where to put this so if it is in wrong area of forum, please move.
I am curious as to whether a council tax bill going to a property (posted by council) occupied by 2 adults (married couple), would be addressed to both adults or just 1 ?
As they are both liable, I would have thought it would be addressed to both, but if someone can prove this is not the case, I would be willing to be taught differently.
Many Thanks

Depends on who registered for it and what name they put it in0

My council tax bill has always been addressed just to me but the money used to come out of my wife's bank account before we got a joint bank account.0

My CT bill is in my name along with all the other bills, that's just how it is, even the mortgage, as I had my house before I met my husband that's how it was and we just kept it like that, we have never got around to changing them and probably never will, if it works no need to change it.0

Our council tax bill is addressed to both of us0

Ours is addressed to both of us too.0

I believe it can be in either parties name (or both). Clearly the council prefer it to be in both people's names as if there is an issue they have 2 people to go after. (Clearly both people are equally liable but it is harder if only person has the name on the bill for them to trace and chase the other person and prove they were living there - it's obviously possible though).
I don't think they mind as long as it is being paid and they understand that different people have their finances set up differently.

The council tax demand notice should list both names for collection purposes (although often it doesn't - a frustration of mine) and is usually addressed to the primary name on the account (usually just the first name listed when the account was created) but some councils will address the notice to all of the liable parties.
In the bigger scheme of things as long as it paid it makes no real difference.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Is this a question about financial liability, or political correctness?0

Then the council are limited to chasing people who have been correctly billed (i.e. those named on a demand notice as liable for the charge).I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals.
