The owner did try to contact the op but was unable to gain a response. 5 weeks incommunicado is a long time. Clothes take up space and these dry cleaners have fast turn around and are often full up with clothes. It is a bit odd not to take a cc but retailers are charged for the service by the cc companies and he'd already been messed about so maybe didn't trust the op.

Most dry cleaners have a collection deadline of 3 months.

Anyway there's not much you can do about it now. Just be pleased some kids in Africa are now wearing designer apparel.

Of course there is. Produce a list of the items the cleaner disposed of, get prices for replacements, send a bill followed by a letter before action if necessary, then start proceedings for recovery of the cost of replacing the goods.
  • I would like to know whether the OP, knowing that they were going away for 5 weeks upon attempting collection and being unable to pay stated to the cleaners "I will be out of the country for 5 weeks, will that be a problem" or in the least pointed out that they may not be able to collect for some time.

Attempting to collect after 3 weeks is in itself a long time. Most dry cleaners have a very fast turn around and even collecting a week later is considered slow by many standards.

While I sympathise with the loss of valuable clothing the OP appears to have shown a lack of interest in collecting their clothes and appears to display an attitude of 'leave them there because they'll still be there when I get around to collecting them one day'.

The OP's lackadaisical attitude to collecting his clothes is really neither here nor there - it doesn't give the shop any right to dispose of the goods, and the shop is required to put him back into the same position as he was in before they did so.
