Windscreen Jets (Mini Cooper)

Hi everybody,

I have a 55 plate Mini Cooper and I'm having a bit of an issue with my jet wipers on both my front and back windscreen. The front ones do work but it's merely a dribble and it's a similar one with the back (although I'm not entirely sure they work at all!).

Any tips? I'm due to take it into the garage at the end of February for its MOT but thought I would ask you lovely folk first (as all of my journeys are becoming a bit nerve wracking with a dirty windscreen, unless it rains!).

Edit - I have Googled the issue and some suggest it is to do with gunk in the holes - I've tried wiggling a pin around in there with no luck. Not sure I feel comfortable taking the pipes out!

  • If both front and back offer only a dribble then it's possible the filter in the pick up pipe in the washer bottle is blocked, or the pump fins are getting perished.

The washer fluid may have been it too long and started to stagnate, or someone put some water in from a dirty container....if there's gunk in the washer jets its come from somewhere.

First thing i would do is pull off the main washer pipe under the bonnet where it connects to the jets and then operate the washers see what sort of flow you have.
If still poor it should be fairly easy to take the washer bottle out, and give a good through wash out and clean up the filter, whilst its out check the pump out too.

Mine was weak and it was the pump motor giving up; not expensive. I have also cleared blocked jets using extra tubing connected to a footpump fitted with an adapter for blowing up airbeds. Could be a number of reasons really. You'll either have to investigate or leave it to the garage to sort out.

I have used the footpump method - one word of caution - don't get in the way of the bogie shooting out of the nozzle at 90 mph :D
  • The rear jet will be blocked up, very common and often requires the jet replacing as they're diffictult to clean or blow out as it tends to corrode more than block with debris etc. cheap fix though And a 30 second job

Front washers sound more likely to be filter if both jets are equally poor, if your not confident pulling a pipe off to check let your garage do it. washer bottle is behind the wing anyway and will req wheel arch removing to access

I have clearned some jets out in the past by inserting a pin or needle. Worth a try as its cheap :)
