Car insurance write off

My car is currently waiting for repair after a non fault claim was submitted by me, at worst my car (vectra 54 plate 1.8 life ) would need a new bumper. However after reading up on it i fear the car could be written off by the insurance co. Firstly does anybody think the car will be written off and if so what happens after that, what are my options.

Possibly. When you say just a bumper was is just a parking scrape or was it a bump where there could be more damage behind?
Are you claiming from your policy or direct from the other insurer?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
My 55 plate car was written off in November after a non fault accident. They base it on the market value and the cost of genuine parts repair cost, There was no scrap value in my car so they let me keep it and I have had it repaired and a VIC done.
I was paid £1400 by the other party's ins company but it only cost me a total od just under £400 to sort it out.
Mine only had a small dent at the side of the rear wheel arch but it needed a replacement axle as she has bent it beyond repair. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If they do talk about writing it off, negotiate to buy the salvage, or some other way of keeping the car. You might be willing to put up with leaving some small dents or scratches on a panel when they've priced up replacement or filling and full panels being repainted.
Also, note that some insurers are not willing to insure cars that have been written off. My insurer was like this, and in the end we negotiated that they paid me in lieu of the repair, without writing it off.0 -

Is the car with the TP insurer garage or your own chosen garage?
If it is a Category C/D write off, my understanding is, it will become the property of the insurance company processing the claim.
You can recover it - but it is not worth the hassle + you need an identity check done after repair and may still have an issue selling it latter.
Best is to negotiate and cash-in a higher market value from the TP insurer. They will own & salvage it.0 -

Only if you accept their offer and dont negotiate keeping the vehicle. Usually a small amount of money.

Not worth the hassle? Why?? You get your car back and money in your pocket.
VIC check is nothing to worry about, A guy checks the vehicle is the make/model/colour its supposed to be and checks the VIN numbers match. All done.
They will own & salvage it.
Only if you let them...
You can get years worth of cheap motoring if the car was good to start with, Or you have changed a lot of parts.

It doesn't have to be that the insurers dictate and the customer complies. Don't forget that it's your property until you accept their offer.
No identity check is needed for class D, and it's not complicated anyway.
If someone wants to keep the vehicle for a long time, loss of value on resale may not matter much. And it may be possible to avoid being categorised anyway.
Someone who can put up with minor dents and scratches remaining, or do some of the work, may save quite a bit on the full repair costs.
The OP's example may well be such a case.0 -
Does any of the above change if it's an insurance writeoff following an own-fault accident?0

Your insurance may not allow you to buy the vehicle back. Prevents people making minor damage and claiming for it then not getting it repaired.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Writing off is a pain. For the basic pootling about motorist, insurance is a minefield. Round our way, because there are lots of sharp junctions and nary a roundabout to be seen, narrow lanes and walls at silly angles, there aren't many locals that don't have a ding in their cars. Mostly they don't claim, but when they do, the car gets taken many miles and it's a long trip just to get your contents back. Getting it back to repair it by someone you trust is nigh on impossible. In the end, you just wonder if it's worth it.0
