Sent Item by Special Delivery but Buyer has Moved

I hope someone can help by this, and apologies if this has been asked before..

I got an order on Friday for a fairly high priced artbook (£29.99) so I sent it Special Delivery on Saturday to arrive Monday.

This morning, I check my emails (which I can’t do at home) to find an email from the customer on Friday night saying that he had failed to update his address with Amazon, so the parcel is going to his old address…

Aaargh.

How does it work with Special Delivery – I don’t know if he’s got a forwarding instruction at his old address. Will they return it to me and how long will it take?

And then what happens – I’ve now paid £7.75 to send Special Delivery. If I’ve got to send it out to him again, can I charge him for this? Or should I just cancel the entire thing and relist – when/if it comes back?

Just when I was feeling sooo excited at having sold it (it's been listed for about 6 months)! Any help/advice would be very much appreciated.

What a pain. Hopefully he has redirected his mail, ask him.

If not then hopefully it will be returnrd in about 10-14 days. Once it is I would ask him to send/deposit the P+P again (probably can't really charge him more than Amazon charge him). If that is not acceptable I would refund less P+P (Amazon charge again) and relist he then has the option of buying again. Might want to check with Amazon on this.

Onw question when did he email you, was it fairly quickly after his purchase or ages later? Obviously if he advised you straightaway it could be seen as your problem.

At the end of the day see how reasonable they will be and play it by ear, you then have to decide how much your feedback is worth to you, if they are difficult.

One way or the other its going to cost you a couple of pounds.

If it gets signed for by the new owners of the old address I doubt it will get returned to you.

Check to see if it's signed for and let the buyer know it's been delivered and signed for already at his old address. He will just have to pick it up himself.

    It shouldn't be.
Special is supposed to be signed by the named addressee.
It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.

where did you get that from? delivery is to the address, not to the addressee, its not royal mails fault on who happens to open the door or collect the mail, their job is to get it to the address.

No anyone at the address can sign. I have also been asked by the postman to sign for next door (but the postman does know me and presumably trusts me not to run off with it).

Here is the relevant bit from the Royal Mail site
Signature will be obtained on delivery of Item from the recipient but not necessarily the addressee.
    from this page

OP - I hope that it all sorts out well for you.

If they have a redirection set up then it should go to their new address.

if anyone is in the address they can sign for it though most will query it if its not theres.
if they do it will be returned to you as addressee gone away. it will come back as a special delivery so you need to sign.
if no ones home and they leave a card then most likely the new occupiers wont collect it but it will stay there for 3 weeks before being returned.
if they have a redirection then as said it should be redirected on but i have a feeling they dont.
have you tracked and traced it on the royal mail site?
