Does hacking the NowTV box with plex compromise pc security?

Hi folks,

Just got a couple of Nowtv boxes set up and really happy with them.

One of these days I am going to try the plex hack on it and just wondering when I put the plex server on my pc, since its probably a hacked version, do you think it could in any way compromise the security of pc, I do online banking and enter cc details there?

As regards plex itself will it just stream video and music from my pc or can it do pictures as well, I don't really want it to do a autoscan for media, but would prefer to add the shared folders instead, if that is possible?

Thank you very much for any replies.
John

There is nothing 'hacked' about the Plex server you will be running on your PC - normal PC application

The only 'hack' was the procedure to get the plex client on to the Now box

    https://plex.tv/

    can do pictures too

you can control entirely what is added to the server for sharing - which folders / autoscan on or off - up to you

I would not even go that far, nothing bee changed, your using a function that was put on the box by the makers. its just its not documented..
  • Got to agree, the nowtv box is just a Roku, with some features REMOVED
still for the price, you just have to love it

    Thanks folks for replies.

Well I got it running on my Nowtv box no problem and then installed the plex media server from,

    https://plex.tv/downloads

    Onto my pc.

One strange little thing though if anyone has an answer. I have windows 7 and after I installed plex media server the pc went through a similar thing to windows update installing 18 updates, started to shutdown and similar to windows update started to install these updates one by one.

Suspicious as I had already installed this months updates, any ideas as to why this seemingly related thing to the Plex media server should happen?

    Thanks

Remember the 13th was Patch Tuesday, so typically they get to peoples PC's Tuesday / Wed. Could it be you'd not installed this months yet, and you were thinking of a prior month?

Its also possible Plex installed an older version of a component and it was then re-upgrade as part of the process.

You should be able to see the update history in Windows Update to see what was recently updated which may help you determine what was installed.
