Reclaiming from being overcharged by my previous provider

I have been living in a flat since moving out of my fathers 3 and a half years ago. When i first moved in(august 2011) i signed up to an energy company for my electricity which decided to charge me up to £40 a month for electricity so I moved to another provider Npower and did a duel fuel agreement for my gas and electric. I left Sparks in December 2011 but they kept on making payments till I phoned them in march 2012 and they stopped the payments. I didn't think about reclaiming the money and after watching martin lewis's show tonight I think I might be able to reclaim but I don't know if it will be a problem with the fact I don't think I gave my previous provider(sparks) a meter reading before I left them. Is there away of trying to reclaim the money if they say they can't reclaim it due to not receiving a meter reading from me?
Any help will be appreciated.

The new company(Npower) that you moved to after Spark were responsible for giving the meter readings to Spark.
Obviously the start meter readings for Npower should be exactly the same as the final meter readings for Spark.
Unfortunately the two companies don't have the finest reputation for administration. However armed with that meter reading from Npower you should be able to get Spark to refund any overpayment.0 -
Thanks for the reply, I phoned Npower to try and get a meter reading and they say they don't have a reading from when i first started with npower. I don't know how i'm gonna be able to get my money back without it. All Npower did was after i started with them in october 2011, they did their first meter reading in janruary 2012 which they used to bill me from october 2011 so how they figured that out is a bit confusing. I don't know what to say to sparks but i'm gonna speak to them tomorrow and see how i get on.0

Ask them for a copy of your final bill which will display the readings they closed your account with and any balance remaining.0

Their first bill for period from Oct 2011 to January 2012 must show the start meter reading they used - how else would they know how much to bill you?
Demand that bill in writing. If necessary write in headed 'complaint.'0 -
