If your employer continues to pay your salary to the old account, it will be automatically forwarded to your new account for 13 months. (CASS Guarantee)

I believe that during this time they will be given your new account details so that they can update their records. Can someone confirm this?

In addition, there is no harm in giving your employer the new details yourself, just to make sure.

I have definitely seen letters from the bank advising us to change payment details following a switch via CASS.

Thanks for your help... So the bank will tell your employer that you have changed banks and you should tell them anyway to be on the safe side

What happens to payments that people send to my old account, i.e. salary, pension or benefit payments?

The Current Account Switch Service will redirect payments to your new account for up to thirteen months from your switch date. Each time an electronic payment is redirected an automatic message is sent back to the originator advising them of the new account details so they can update their records. Some organisations may contact you directly to confirm your details have changed.
