Surely there are boffins out there who can design some sort of aerial level crossing for the planes to stop at when there is traffic below?

We are living in the 21st century, I can't see why that isn't possible with all the technology we have available now.

I am surprised there are not more accidents on that section of road of the M25

I am not sure how serious the original post was but when Heathrow is on 09 easterly operations all the aircraft are on short finals as they cross the M25 so they will be full gear down and very low

having driven this section fairly often it can be a serious distraction for some

Having lived not far from there for 27 years I have driven that stretch of the M25 countless times so I am well used to seeing and hearing low flying aircraft.

Are there any warning signs for those unfamiliar with the area?

I have been startled by low flying planes occasionally elsewhere. It can be scary.

A Concorde flew low over my car from behind once and made me jump a bit. It was after they had been withdrawn from service and I think it was flying to its final resting place.

About a year ago a military Chinook flew very low overhead from behind and again made me jump.

A Spitfire almost made me fall off my bike last year. :rotfl: I now live near Goodwood in West Sussex and there is a Spitfire based there. I was cycling along the Centurian Way walking and cycling track, a converted old railway line, when the Spit roared overhead at about 200 feet.

I got off the bike and watched it practice aerial manouvers for about ten minutes over nearby fields. A spectacular sight and a wonderful noise from the Merlin engine.

Why oh why are low flying aircraft allowed to affect my journey around the M25? This problem is especially accute on the stretch near the M4 intersection, with large aircraft overflying the road, darkening the sky and distracting my concentration.

Can these aircraft not stop or maintain a holding pattern until such time as there's a clear space on the M25, so they can overfly it and continue on to where ever they go. Or at the very least, if that' not possible can't the authorities divert them around the M25 until they find a safe spot to cross.

I have a sneaking suspicion some of these flights carry cyclists too, so yet again they're trying to trump their right of way over those of innocent blighted motorists.

You are so right. Fortunately, Boris has new plans to stop this nuisance air traffic across the M25 and if elected will be building a giant tunnel starting in Maidenhead and ending next to Terminal 5, through which all aircraft will have to land/take off. A bargain at £130bn. Cyclists will only be allowed on board if they have a folding bike and it's not taking up space required by a car-driving passenger.

What idiot thought it was a good idea to have motorways and airports near each other, and also both near centres of population?

Surely if some of the nimbies on the outskirts of London had their way, the M25 could have been in mid-Wales and the world's busiest airport somewhere in the Scottish Highlands?

But, armyknife, as an aeroplane passenger, I've paid my Air Tax and so we have a right to travel in the airspace in whatever way we please. Sure, some locals might argue that the tax goes to general taxation and there are many disadvantages that they suffer due to the noise from the flights, but they're freeloading, taking advantage of a historical loophole - they haven't paid any contribution to the management of the space above their houses, whereas we've paid our Air Tax!

Air tax is paid outbound, not inbound, so it could be argued not to be the case.

Obviously depending on where you've come from, you could have paid APD, but not to the British government unless a UK-UK flight.

26 ops is far less of a problem I've found at LHR, but the other issue I've seen is STN on 04 ops, with the same issue on the M11 (I drive this stretch daily), although this is largely B738 and A32X ops, thus smaller and less of a distraction, with the runway at an angle.

I'm more worried about EMA. They've already had one aircraft fall short onto the M1

  • Horses wear blinkers to stop them being distracted by things going on in their vision periphery, may I suggest something similar? It would obviously need a horizontal piece above the brow to prevent things above being a distraction.

Or possibly paint over the windows leaving a strip at the bottom of the windscreen so you can still see some of the road, you don't want to be dangerous.
