Laptop Aerial

I installed an external Wi-Fi aerial on my laptop and get an icon on the taskbar which tells me it gives a signal of 18Mbps as opposed to 1Mbps on the internal aerial.I know it works because if I turn off the internal aerial I'm still connected,but I don't seem to get any increase in downloading.Do I have to do anything extra like linking it to the internal aerial?
