Is it more a case of the email addresses look the same but the dot is in a different place? (john.doe .... joh.ndoe - I have just done a test and Gmail would treat both of these as johndoe. I'm not sure though if Gmail allows different people to create such addresses - if they do then it's possible that the other people have been getting some emails intended for you).

Or could it just be that THEY have entered their email address incorrectly at the sites for which you are receiving emails?

But to answer the specific question asked ... it's not possible to change your email address. You can change your username, or you can create new Gmail addresses.

There are 2 D's in the googlemail account, is this correct? If so then you should not receive this mail as it is a different name. If you have a gmail address then you usually have the same with googlemail after it, I do.

Could you create a filter to pick up emails addressed to "oldd.git" and dump them into a different folder? My OH has been receiving emails for someone in the US for about four or five years now - he has invites to join a fraternity in the University of Georgia, and is up to date with what the NRA are up to at the moment.

We both have the same first name and surname .
The only difference is one first name has an extra letter .

    Don't think so.
    1. create a new gmail account
    2. tell all important people/organisations about your email address change
    3. download http://www.mailstore.com/en/mailstore-home-email-archiving.aspx
    4. backup your old email account using mailstore
    5. restore your backed up mail to the new gmail account
    6. delete the original gmail account

    So you have different names.

Have you been getting emails misaddressed to oldd.git sent to old.git in error? Or are they addressed to oldd.git and coming to you?

The full stop means nothing to Gmail/Googlemail

I get a lot of incorrect mail from all over the world cos someone has recorded it or typed it incorrectly.

And that is almost certainly the problem ... which was the 2nd thing I pointed out in post #2. :)
