How come no one has said Avoid PC World

Anything you can buy in pc world can be bought from a different company that might have decent customer service, will definitely actually know something about computers and usually for a better price.

Because in the last couple of years they have really bucked up their ideas.

My Windows Vista laptop is 8 years old and still runs like a dream. Never had to make repairs on it once. As long as you look after it you can get it to last ages.

Two of my IBM Thinkpads are 10 years old (WinXP), the other is 16 years old (Win98). The newest has been running 24/7 since around 2008 as a home HTTP/FTP/Ventrilo server, running uTorrent, Skype and my security webcams, with additional storage in the form of two external hard drives, the internal "ultrabay" and a NAS drive attached to my router. So not the easiest life......

I didn't say a laptop couldn't last more than a few years, I said the cheap consumer grade rubbish isn't designed to last more than a few years and by the time they go wrong it's usually cheaper to buy another one than to get it repaired.

I've tried stripping down and repairing such laptops and they are the biggest pile of excrement going. In sharp contrast to my IBM, which takes less than 15 mins to remove any single modular part within the unit, with every single screw hole clearly marked as to what it removes and which size screw (of 4 different sizes) goes into it.

Have they really? Do the sales staff now actually know what they're talking about?
Friend of mine worked there up until a few years ago and the horror stories he's told me..... Well..... I couldn't repeat some of the dodgy stuff he was asked to do.

Thank you all for your responses.

I am looking for a new laptop because cracks are appearing on the hardware of this one. I know it's only cosmetic but I don't want it to fall to pieces and then have nothing as a replacement.

As I made an impulse purchase with this one, I didn't do any research. The battery died after 3 months and I wasn't even using it much. The adapater/charger thing recently popped it's clogs and I ended up buying a new one for £50. I would rather not waste any more money on this beast and get something new.

The only reason I am going to PC World is because I have just cashed in my Consumer Pulse (definitely one to join if they are recruiting again!) points and I have £200 worth of vouchers to use up.

Thanks again for your help, and thanks to the folk that have pointed out suggestions.

I think it depends what goes wrong. I've repaired consumer-grade laptops before -- mainly replacement hard drives, RAM, keyboards, case, etc. I'm not overly experienced, but I've never had any problems.

My consumer-grade laptop (bought from Comet) is 10 years-old roughly and the only repair I've had to do is replace the crippled XP Home installation with a copy of XP Pro. It runs like a dream, although the battery capacity has sharply dropped off recently.

If the hardware specs are adequate for what you need it to, it's always worth checking to see how much a repair would cost before throwing money away.

if buying an Asus one get the extended warranty from Asus and not pc world
    Asus C/S is very good
I have had an Asus lappy repaired under extended warranty on the last few days of the warranty and the lappy had a hole in the side of the casing and Asus still honoured the warranty
Spending my time reading how to fix PC's,instead of looking at Facebook.

    Nope. They haven't.

I made the mistake of buying a laptop from them, because I needed one and they had a special in-store offer.

They wasted hours of my time by telling me the laptop was in stock in store, when it wasn't (twice).
They tried to mis-sell me another laptop (I knew exactly the specs of both laptops, and I knew I was being mis-sold).
They tried to force me into paying a £30 "set-up" cost, because the only laptop they had in stock was already set-up, so I'd have to pay.
Then after admitting they couldn't find the laptop they said they had, they agreed to order in store for me - however, they ordered it as a business purchase, booking the sale to a fictitious business in my name.
When the laptop did arrive in store, because it didn't come via the normal stock process (it was address to Mr C Rex, Sole Trader, Unit 123, Craptown retail park) where the unit given was teh store address. As a result it was left out on the shop floor rather than being secured in the stock room. Even so, it took nearly an hour for staff to find the laptop and they only looked in the store at my insistence, as I was making a scene. They otherwise denied that the laptop existed or had been paid for as the receipt I was given didn't say "laptop" it just said "remittance" and because it had been ordered from the business department, in store staff could not trace the order.
I made 2 written complaints to the store manager, saying that I reject the laptop as I do not consent to a business contract as a personal buyer. Automated acknowledgements. No human reply.
