Enter the VIN code on this site - what model year does it show:

    It states 2008.

But it does not mention the other reg number.
The V5C will only show the currently allocated number, and that SHOULD be the same as is on either end of the vehicle.
Its so irritating that the 04 reg is on the service booklet and the 2010/2011 MOT certificate.
But that's the plate that was on it at the time. What would you expect them to show? The MOT will also have the VIN on it, which won't have changed.
  • as above, it had a vanity plate

one of my cars has a E (1988) reg plate on it, but it is a 1994 car. I got it because it has my initials on it.
GC Jan £431.490/£480.00  £48.51 under budget!
  • Many helpful posts above.

Also from a more basic approach I would expect there will be numerous differences between a 2004 model and a 2008 model as manufacturers regularly make changes to vehicles year on year.

Whatever the make is you could find an appropriate forum and ask the question there as to what differences you would expect to see. Or take a look online yourself at other examples for sale.

If the V5C states date of first registration as 2008 and that it was new then you have no problem at all.

What does it matter what number plate the van used to have?

The number plate means nothing at all.

You are quite honestly getting yourself in a tizz about nothing.

Because the service booklet and the MOT certificate had the 2004 reg on it I believe the car to be a 2004 model and not a 2008.

I did the VIN check and it came back as a 2009 model.

I will now go and google the model type to see it this type existed in 2004.

Maybe the 2004 was a vanity plate and I am getting myself in a tizz.

When I bought the van it carried the 2008 plate.
  • The paperwork with the MOT certificates for our cars contains the mileage details for the past several years MOT tests.

I am sure there is a website you can check MOT details (advisories etc.) This might give you a clue if the van has been clocked by looking at prior mileage. However, I would think that would be difficult as everything is computerised now.

You can check the MOT history here:

    http://motinfo.direct.gov.uk/internet/jsp/ECSID-Internet-Status-Request.jsp

So you'll see by the first one when it was 3 years old.

Obviously if it's a 2008 vehicle then the first MOT would be in 2011.

    Let's know what you find.

OK, I think it was a vanity plate the van had when it first got registered.

I cannot tell from the shape as its the same from 2004 up to 2010.

The V5C states the date of first registration as 2008.

But one of the extras it has was not available in the UK before end of 2008. So the van has to be a 2008/2009 model.

I must say I am relieved and thank you all for your tips on where to check things. It just threw me about the 2004 number plate/vanity plate issue on the service book and the very first MOT certificate in 2011.

At least now I can sleep in peace. Should I ever need to buy a used vehicle again I am a little bit wiser.

According to the MOT certificates the mileages tally somewhat with the service booklet numbers. However that is no guarantee that the milage was not manipulated before the new MOT certificated came into force.
Also I read on another website that the digital mileage counters are very easy to manipulate, all one needs is a computer.

I spent a fortune putting my signage all over it. Its very feminine and hippy looking, ((swirly flowers and leaves in greens, pinks and purples) as I am into horticulture). My son won't be seen dead driving it during the day. But it gets me noticed, gets me customers and hopefully will keep the thieves and vandals away.
