Best thing I did was to get a laser printer. No more dried up ink jets, or messing with refilling cartridges.

My laser was £49 from Tesco a couple of years ago, a Dell 1250c colour printer. Saw it and didn't hesitate in buying it.

The original toners started to need replacing after a year and a new set of four from ebay was something like £20.

In fact the yellow is still the original after 2 years!

Monochrome ones are now from about £40 and I'm not sure what the cheapest colour ones are at the moment. Just check that you can get cheap toners before taking the plunge.

How much printing do you do? (sheets/month average) Mainly B/W or a mixture of B/W and colour? Just printing or print/scan/copy?
Finally, what is your current printer's make/model.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.
  • thanks both

after research I am going down the laser route
  • Check the price of the extras because it can really make things far more expensive than they at first appear!

    Toners and or refills
Photoconductor Unit can be extremely expensive
Any additional transfer devices that might be required which are usually less expensive.

The photoconductor units are not usually designed for one of pages and can be degraded by powering on/off frequently which can make them even more expensive than they at first seem. If the units life is degraded by being powered on and off to print single pages then it could work out very expensive.

I do have a colour laser printer but barely use it because of the photoconductor life issues, it's just not worth powering on for single pages that I need. Output is excellent which it should be for such a high end laser printer even if it is getting quite old.

Depends what you are using it for.

For colour photos, get them printed as real photos, at Asda.

For monochrome (letters, emails etc.), I don't think you can beat a Laser printer.

Ryman (formerly Stationary Box) are doing a Samsung for £60.

Compatible cartridges (with a capacity of around 1,000 pages) are less than £21, including P&P, from Amazon.

    That's ~ 2.1p per page.

ETA: Ryman are also doing a Brother HL/1112 for £49-99.

Compatible cartridges are £12-80 (including Shipping), on Amazon.

I agree a laser is better for a lot of uses. When my cartridge needed replacing the potential cost varied from £19 to £133. Unsurprisingly I bought the £19 one and it has been fine for over a year now, no leaks and no sign of running out.

I loved your "INJECT" printer type!
Inkjets are where you inject £lots on ink cartridges, as you say... :T
  • The lowest cost (per sheet) I can find for colour lasers is the Brother HL3150CDW (where 'D' means it has the duplexer) ... printer which costs about £140 to buy.
2000 sheets a month costs me £9 for a reman black toner on Ebay, so thats 0.45p a sheet for ink. I don't use much colour.
There are no chips to worry about with this model, resetting the sheet counters is easy on the front panel.
I looked into the correct bottled bulk toner... but its only marginally cheaper that the £9, and a lot more hassle.
At 15k sheets you may need a new drum unit ... about £15 for each colour.
My old HP C309 inkjet was cheaper, at about 3p a sheet to run... but was slower noisier, and needed much more maintenance. (using Ebay cartridges at £1 each).
Does anyone know of a colour laser cheaper to run ?
