In view of the weather tonight, I think many of us would be quite happy to accept the whole package Brodev, so long as the Portugal bit is included!
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Hiya Lewt, I was wondering whether anyone was around. Going fine here, just on my first of the day - Coke Zero that is, very refreshing too!
.
I'd be interested to know what the general views are on things like sherry trifle, brandy butter, rum & raisin ice cream etc. Not too bothered about them myself, but if say you went to a dinner party and the desert was sherry trifle, would you have some? Or what if the main course was coq au vin? I think that would be okay actually, as the alcohol is removed by cooking, so you just get the flavour.
My husband asked me today when we were shopping whether I'd like a bottle of non-alcoholic wine, but I can't see the point really, I'm quite happy with pop.
Hope everyone is still on track, do pop in and say hello. Is Brodev on holiday in Portugal, or does he live there?I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Hiya all and Happy New Year everyone
Good to see so many active posters over the holiday period, I didnt get much chance to be here myself, hubby hates me being online when hes here (works away and home for the hols)
Bogof_babe, the alcohol in food is a killer decision. My first two Christmases were a nightmare as I LOVE mince pies and Christmas pudding along with brandy butter and cream. I went without( The following year I thought sod it, I love it and Im having it - and I have done every year since and nope - never got drunk
I remember also in my second year sober I was having really bad cravings and was so tempted to go buy all the sherry truffle (hate the stuff) I could find to try get a sneaky drink inI remember talking it over with my counselor and her saying I would have been sick long before I ever got enough alcohol in my system to do any harm. I have to say I never tried to find out
I dont avoid alcohol in food anymore. In cooked food the alcohol is burned off and theres never enough booze in shop bought puds to do any harm (mostly its just flavorings).
However I am now very wary of a certain liqueur chocolate. I was bought a box earlier in the year, had eaten them before and no worries. This night I had sat down and before I knew it I had scoffed 6 straight off - I stood up to put the box away and was well aware I was very unsteady on my feet and believe it or not - I had a hangover in the morning:eek:
I have also fallen flat on my face after using a mouthwash prescribed by my dentist:eek::eek:
Oh and I avoid "alcohol free" drinks for two reasons - one - there is always some alcohol left in and two - its too symbolic of drinking- going down the booze aisle of the supermarket, keeping the bottle in the fridge, the finding a corkscrew, pouring into a wine glass, etc etc I prefer to glug pop out of a normal glass and not think anything off it
I guess its trial and error, what effects one wont effect another, I dont think theres any hard and fast rule - let your body and conscience guide you on that0 -
I believe that everybody has there own slant on alcohol in food. Personally if the food is cooked in alcohol like coq au vin then I don't have a problem as the alcohol is boiled off. Sherry trifle however, is different for me, as there is usually a lot of sherry in the ones I have seen made and there is no cooking. I don't take sherry trifle. I was once given soup to which a large amount of alcohol was added before serving (I can't remember the name). I was having a sip when I smelled the alcohol so I didn't have any more. The only people in my experience that have had any problems with what I drank or ate were other problem drinkers. My wife is vegetarian and therefore causes "problems" for people who invite her to dinner. Funnily between her being a vegie and me being an alkie none of our friends seem to mind at allSomething Really Interesting0

I don't have alcohol in my food. I did use to use mouthwash and medicines with alcohol in them, but I found that with my new medication I can taste it more, so I avoid it. I do read ingredients lists to make sure what I eat doesn't have alcohol in it. There are some medications that I can't get non-alcoholic versions of, so I do take them. That said, I try not to use medications much anyway. I don't drink alcohol free drinks like wine subsitutes either. I suppose being in early recovery, I'm in the terrified stage where I'm going everything and anything to make sure I don't drink! I find eating out to be a bit difficult - not only can I not have alcohol, but I have to avoid sugar and white flour too, a whole range of other things. One thing I do miss is Tiramisu.Stay-at-home, attached Mummy to a 23lb 10oz, 11 month old baby boy.0

just reading the posts today and i remembered a few months ago my mrs got me some cough medicene and i necked it from the bottle, as soon as i swollowed it i knew it had alcohol in. it tuned out to be 8% if id have know that when i was on it i would no doubt have drank it. anyway i thought about making myself sick but couldnt.. so i ate !!!!!! loads of food.
I dont have the choccies either as they are just alcohol.. liike feelie said i just wouldnt risk it now, i have to much to lose for the sake of food. i worked in kicthens before and i know some chefs add the alcohol at the end so no chance of it being burnt off.....If i upset you don't stress, never forget that god aint finished with me yet.0
