How many clothes does a 3yr old need?

He's got so many so I'd like to have a new year clear out but how much do I keep?

Your thoughts much appreciated

Also how about a year old girl?

My DD is almost 3 and seems to have loads of clothes, but then sometimes if I fall behind with the washing or she's had a tummy bug or has had a few accidents she's almost down to empty drawers so I'm glad she has as much as she does!!

Enough to be able to go a week without washing is my general rule of thumb for kids clothes. That way you can cope with holidays, broken washing machines, struggling to dry washing in winter etc.

Saying that, I always over buy for my daughter.

Pick out what you'd like to get rid off and store them away somewhere for a month or so. If you haven't needed to get any of them back into regular use, you can pass them on to someone else.

Depends on the child. I have twin - muck - magnet - boys. My friend has a girl who 'doesn't do mud'.
Having twins, I can get away with slightly less than two different aged siblings as they would share jumpers etc. The also kill jeans with alarming regularity - that's why I buy every day jeans from bootsales and charity shops.
I generally have 10+ pairs trousers/shorts, about 20 tops/t-shirts, more socks than you can shake a stick at (including several single ones. I have learnt that we only buy grey socks now, with different coloured toes for easy matching up, and they wear their school socks at weekends), 4 coats (one school and one weekend anorak type). This is for both kids. I probably have far more as most of their clothes are bootsale bargains. I buy nicer brand clothes for a fraction of the price. My all time bargain was a Regatta 3in1 jacket for 50p. Shame they didn't have 2!

I have a purge once a year, where I go through the cupboards looking for stuff that is too small or stained beyond retrieval. You should be able to judge how much you need by whether you ever find yourself hunting for a clean top/trousers etc. The exact amount will depend on the frequency of your laundry cycle and how long it takes to get things dry (in the winter it can take 3 days for everything on our crowded drier to be dry enough to put away, but in the summer it takes less time as I can put it outside).

I always go by the rule that I will have 14 different complete outfits per child, including, bottoms, t shirts and jumpers. 2 nice party outfits. 2 coats. Lots of underwear and a good selection of hats and gloves.

That way if there's a holiday, broken machine, illness we have plenty. Of course my teenager could clothe herself in different attire for at least a month, but that's teenagers when they start earning their own money!!

My three year old has lots bought mainly by grandparents and family for Xmas. I tend to have nursery clothes which get paint and other things on them, nicer weekend/going out clothes and party clothes. I agree a weeks worth without washing is a good idea. She is quite small so last years nicer clothes are now this years nursery clothes.

5-10 outfits, plus 1-2 for formal/special occasions. You could probably get by with much less if you wanted/needed to.

Enjoy the fact most 1 & 3 year olds will wear what you choose :-)

Depends on a few things:

How often you like to get washing on - every day versus clearing it all over the weekend
If they go to a preschool that has a uniform - the amount of clothes my eldest goes through has gone right down because she does three sessions a week where she just needs uniform colour top and sensible bottoms
Potty training/puke/pee factor

The other thing that's cut down the amount my two (almost 3 and almost 2) need is buying a couple of sets of toddler waterproof coats and bottoms (we got them from Lidl a few months back) - means you don't end up with those days where you go to the park and need to change trousers because they've gone down a slightly damp slide and got a soggy behind, or, like mine, found the biggest puddle in the world and landed up to their waist in it.

Mine have a three drawer chest of drawers each and then half a wardrobe hanging space - and both are jammed - but I do get a good two child's worth of wear out of things because their height and age difference now means they can share jumpers at a push and I just pull outgrown clothes out of one set of drawers and into the other's at the moment!
